Dental Implants Portland, OR

3D rendered cross-section view of a dental implant placed in the jaw between two healthy teeth illustrated by West End Dental, in Portland, ORTooth loss is a big deal and affects every part of your life. Losing one tooth has big consequences.

One of the most obvious effects of tooth loss is on your smile. Eating and speaking become harder.

Below the gums tooth loss affects the health of your jawbone.

Without teeth the bone starts to weaken and change shape which can then lead to other issues.

Replacing your missing teeth is key to restoring your oral health and your smile.

West End Dental can provide the dental implants you need to restore your smile. Dr. Krippaehne was initially trained in implant surgery at UTHSC San Antonio.

He was the first resident in the General Practice program to be trained.

He has since taken many implant related courses including an American Association of Implant Dentistry MaxiCourse® MaxiCourse® and continues to attend the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry Advanced Implant Study Club.

As the field evolves so does Dr. Krippaehne.

3D imaging is used preoperatively for implant placement planning. In more complex cases 3D imaging and digital optical scanning is used to create surgical guides to ensure precise placement of the implants.

Our office is a warm and welcoming place so every patient feels comfortable during their visit.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a modern solution to tooth loss, an alternative to bridges and dentures. While they are the latest option they are also the most popular.

Dental implants are three parts.

•  A titanium post: The actual implant itself is a small titanium post that requires a surgical procedure to be placed into your jaw. As you heal from surgery your natural bone fuses to the post, a process called osseointegration, it becomes part of your jaw. Once you have fully healed it’s then used to support your replacement tooth.

•  An abutment: The abutment is a small connector that is placed on the top of the titanium post. The abutment connects the tooth to the implant and provides the false tooth with stability.

•  A crown: The crown is what replaces the visible part of your missing tooth, so you can eat and speak and smile. Crowns are made of ceramic which mimics many of the properties of natural tooth enamel, color and how it reflects light.

Definition and Purpose

Dental implants are a type of prosthetic tooth replacement that mimics the natural tooth structure. They are three parts: the metal implant post, the abutment and the crown.

The metal implant post, made of titanium, is placed in the jawbone where the tooth is missing. The abutment connects the implant and the crown, fits into the gum line.

The crown, a ceramic cap, replaces the missing tooth and matches the color of your natural teeth.

The purpose of dental implants is to replace missing teeth and chewing function, retain dentures and boost self esteem by enhancing your smile.

Treatment for Many Oral Health Situations

Dental implants are a very versatile treatment and can be customized to your needs, whether you have lost one tooth, several teeth or all of your teeth. There’s an implant for just about every situation.

•  Single tooth implants. One post supports one crown, replacing a single lost tooth.

•  Multiple tooth implants. One or more posts support two or more crowns, several missing teeth. This type of implant is also called an implant supported bridge.

•  Implant supported a denture. This restoration uses 4 to 8 posts to support an entire arch of replacement teeth. Used when you have lost all teeth in one arch.

•  All-on-4® Treatment Concept, also known as "Teeth in a day". This treatment is used when your remaining teeth in an arch are destroyed and have a poor long term prognosis. This treatment uses only 4 dental implant posts which are strategically placed in your jaw to make the most of the bone you have left.

Teeth in a day means teeth are removed, implants are surgically placed and a prosthesis is placed all in the same day.

There are several appointments before “the big day” to be able to do that type of treatment.

Also there are other appointments to create the final prosthesis after the implants have fully healed in the jaw bone.

The goal of this procedure is to have patients leave the office with the appearance they have teeth the same day they have had all the other remaining teeth removed.

Why Dental Implants?

•  They restore your mouth’s basic functions so you can eat your favourite foods and speak properly.

•  The crowns look just like your natural teeth, restoring your beautiful smile.

•  They are more comfortable than dentures. Instead of sitting on your gums, the crowns are supported by the titanium posts which get their support from the bone in your jaw. Read more about dental Implants vs dentures.

•  They are permanent. The teeth are screwed in.

•  They are easier to maintain and can be brushed and flossed like your natural teeth.

•  The posts stimulate the bone in your jaw just like the roots of your natural teeth. This stops and prevents the bone loss that follows tooth loss. Implants are the only replacement option that has this benefit.

We take the time to understand your individual needs and tailor our treatment to get the best results.

Better Oral Function

Dental implants can improve oral function, you can eat, speak and chew with confidence. They stop bone loss and protect adjacent teeth from damage.

With dental implants you can eat and drink anything you want without worrying about your teeth shifting or falling out. Also dental implants provide a stable and secure base for your teeth, better speech and articulation.

This stability means your teeth will stay in place so you can enjoy your favourite meals and conversations without hesitation.

Cosmetic

Dental implants can improve the cosmetic appeal of your smile.

The ceramic crown is designed to match the colour and shape of your surrounding teeth, so it looks seamless and natural. Dental implants also restore the natural contours of your face which can be affected by missing teeth.

With dental implants you can have a more youthful and radiant look, boost your self confidence and overall well being. A beautiful smile can make a big difference in how you feel about yourself and how others see you.

Drawbacks to Dental Implants

While dental implants have many benefits, they also have some drawbacks.
•  They require a surgical procedure to place the posts.
•  After surgery there may be a long recovery time which can take several months.
•  They are more expensive than bridges and dentures.
•  If you don’t maintain your implants properly gum disease can occur which can lead to implant failure.
•  If the bone in your jaw is not enough to support the posts you may need an additional surgery called bone graft before you can have the implant surgery.

In the end it’s your choice what to do with your teeth and we are here to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Dental implant procedures involves several steps to get the best results:

•  Consultation: The dentist will examine and consult to determine if dental implants are for you.
•  Implant placement: The dentist will place the metal post in your jawbone where it will integrate with the surrounding bone.
•  Abutment attachment: The abutment is attached to the post and the gum is allowed to heal around it.
•  Crown placement: The ceramic crown is placed on top of the abutment, the dental implant is complete.
