The Link Between Stress and Dental Problems

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
The Link Between Stress and Dental ProblemsIt's no secret that stress can take a toll on your mental and emotional health, but did you know it can also affect your physical health? Here, we will discuss the link between stress and dental problems. Stress can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infection. It will increase inflammation in the body, leading to gum disease. If you're feeling stressed out, make sure to take care of yourself mentally and physically by practicing healthy habits like exercise and meditation!

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common condition that several different things can cause, including stress. Stress can cause gum disease because it weakens the immune system. When the immune system is weakened, it cannot fight off the bacteria that cause gum disease. It can lead to inflammation of the gums and eventually tooth loss. A dentist will be able to tell if you have gum disease and can help you treat it. Some treatment methods include scaling and root planing, deep cleaning of the teeth, and antibiotics.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay can occur due to various reasons like not brushing regularly, not flossing, eating sugary foods, etc. However, did you know that stress can also be a factor in tooth decay? When stressed, our bodies produce cortisol, the "stress hormone." Cortisol may weaken the immune system and make us more susceptible to infections. It means we are more likely to get cavities when stressed. A cavity is treated by a dentist by drilling and filling the hole that has formed in the tooth.

Teeth Grinding

It is not uncommon for people to clench or grind their teeth when feeling stressed. It can apply a lot of pressure on your teeth and jaw, leading to pain and other problems. If you find yourself doing this, trying to relax and reduce the amount of stress in your life is essential.
