Adult Orthodontics

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Adult Orthodontics Growing up with crooked teeth is hard. Getting treatments such as braces was impossible at a young age for many. As an adult, you would like to change your look to improve your aestheticism. We are going to discuss orthodontics and why it is important for adults.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics aims to better the appearance of the teeth and the jaw. The procedures entail closing the gaps between teeth, aligning, shaping crooked teeth, improving speech and eating, and preventing long-term wear and tear. Orthodontics is done by the use of special devices such as braces. Braces are permanent wires or bands attached to teeth for straightening and aligning them to the positions required. Dentists may also use devices that are removable such as aligners. They blend with the mouth and can be removed when brushing and eating. Aligners are replaced every 2-3 weeks for tighter ones. Retainers, on the other hand, prevent teeth from returning to their original position. They can be permanent or removable, depending on the condition of the patient's teeth.

Reasons for orthodontic treatment

The main reason we should seek better orthodontic treatment is to improve our dental health. Straight teeth help create a good and bright smile. The straightened teeth also enhance better functionality of the mouth, with activities such as biting and chewing taking place at their optimal levels. Malocclusions negatively affect dental health as teeth lose or migrate because they do not interact well with the rest. They also lead to chipped or fractured teeth due to irregular eating patterns. The irregular biting may lead to wear and tear between the teeth and jaws. A nice straight smile will help you improve social interactions and even suitors. It will also go a long way to boosting your self-esteem.
