Lost Crown? What To Do and Steps to Take

Losing a dental crown can happen to any one of us. While it is not a common occurrence, it can still occur. This is why we believe it is essential to know what to do in such a situation so that you can minimize the damage and get your crown replaced as soon as possible. Here are the steps to take if you lose your dental crown:

My Crown Fell Out, What Should I Do?

If your crown falls out, the first thing you should do is find it. If you can't find it, don't worry – it's not the end of the world. However, you will need to see your dentist as soon as possible so that they can replace the lost crown.

In the meantime, there are a few things you can do before seeing the doctor. The first thing you should do is rinse your mouth with warm water and put a cold compress on it. This will help reduce the swelling if there's trauma to the tooth after losing the crown.

Is Losing a Crown an Emergency?

It is not an emergency to lose a dental crown, but you should still see your dentist as soon as possible. This is because if the crown falls out for any reason, there is a chance that the tooth underneath could become exposed and susceptible to infection.

If you have lost your dental crown and it is not an emergency, you can call your dentist and schedule an appointment. However, if you are experiencing pain or discomfort after losing the crown, you should go to the ER immediately.

How Long Can You Go Without a Crown?

It is possible to go without a crown for as long as you need, but it will depend on your specific case. For example, if the tooth that has lost its crown had received root canal treatment, and there wasn't any infection before losing the crown, you can probably wait at least two weeks before getting it replaced. However, if the tooth was not treated with a root canal or some other procedure beforehand and had no previous issues with decay or infections of this nature, then waiting more than three days would be unwise.
