Never Place Aspirin Directly On a Painful Tooth

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Never Place Aspirin Directly On a Painful ToothNon-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like Aspirin, can be used to ease pain and inflammation. In fact, we suggest our patients take anti-inflammatory medicine if they cannot be seen by our office right away. However, it is important to read the label to decide if this medicine is good to take considering your own unique medical history. If you do choose to take an Aspirin to reduce pain, consider following the directions on the package closely and swallowing it instead of placing it directly on your painful tooth.

How Direct Contact Between Aspirin and Your Mouth Affects You

It is not good to have direct contact between an aspirin and your tooth. Aspirin contains salicylic acid. Upon contact, this acid can burn your gum tissue. In addition, if you put it on your tooth, it will not relieve the discomfort you are feeling in your tooth, and it will leave you with damaged gums. Take the aspirin according to the directions on the medicine label. Take the aspirin with food if you have an upset stomach. Consult your pharmacist if you are unsure if you should take an aspirin for your painful tooth. They may be able to look at other medications you are taking and help you before you can get into our office for an appointment.
