Do You Know What Type of Debris Live in Your Toothbrush?

Posted on 6/21/2021 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Do You Know What Type of Debris Live in Your Toothbrush? It can be kind of scary, especially if you look at a toothbrush up close, or through a microscope. You certainly will not like what you see. Contaminants and food debris can linger among the bristles if you do not rinse your toothbrush thoroughly. Therefore, you need to make sure your toothbrush is always ultra clean.

How Toothbrushes Can Get Contaminated

While we rely on a toothbrush to clean our teeth, we also do not want to use a brush that is dirty or serves as a host for germs and plaque. This can happen if you do not rinse your toothbrush completely or store it next to the bathroom sink. Store your toothbrush in a clean and well-ventilated place, so it dries thoroughly and is not exposed to any bad germs or contaminants.

Why You Should Not Store Your Toothbrush Next to the Sink

Unfortunately, you do not want to store your toothbrush next to the bathroom sink, as it can catch some of the spray from the toilet when you flush it. Also, it can also be subjected to contaminants when you wash your hands or splash water on your face. Both these events can negatively affect your toothbrush as well as your dental health.

Keeping Your Toothbrush Sanitized

Because your toothbrush can serve as a breeding ground for germs, you should invest in a UV sanitizer or keep your toothbrush sanitized. If cost is a concern, you can also use an antibacterial mouth rinse. Dip the head of the brush in a small amount of the substance, then rinse the brush. Do not use a mouthwash with alcohol, as it can dry out the bristles. Always rinse your toothbrush after each use and store it by itself in a dry and well-ventilated space away from the sink.
