Can Overbrushing Damage Your Teeth?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Can Overbrushing Damage Your Teeth?Brushing thoroughly is our main defense against tooth decay and gum disease, but there is something such as too thorough – this is called overbrushing. While people who overbrush are trying to make sure that they're maintaining good oral hygiene, they're actually doing the opposite since overbrushing can cause serious tooth and gum damage. We've outlined the results of overbrushing below.

Worn Down Enamel

Overbrushing teeth can damage and wear down the tooth enamel. Since the enamel protects the tooth from tooth decay, this is especially troubling. Remember – once the enamel is gone, it's gone for good. This can leave your teeth vulnerable to damage and even tooth loss.

Tooth Abrasion

Tooth abrasion may start with worn down enamel, but this isn't where the damage stops – the dentin and cementum structures are the next target. Instead of forceful brushing, you should focus on technique since plaque is soft and doesn't need pressure for removal.

Tooth Sensitivity

The thinning of the tooth enamel results in exposed nerves, which react and cause sensitivity. This can make consuming hot and cold items painful and can even make brushing your teeth a bloody and painful activity.

Gum Recession

Gum tissue is soft and doesn't have protective layers, and so, aggressive brushing can result in a lot of damage. Gum recession exposes the roots of the teeth and makes your teeth vulnerable to cavities and eventual decay. Over time, this can even lead to gum disease.

Therefore, although brushing your teeth is of utmost importance, it is essential to do this carefully and follow the right technique. If you think you've been overbrushing or are facing issues like sensitivity, gum bleeding, and gum recession, call West End Dental at (503) 446-2957.
