Is There a Link Between Oral Health and Stroke?

Posted on 1/11/2021 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Is There a Link Between Oral Health and Stroke?According to the CDC, more than 795,000 Americans have a stroke every year. Now, research thinks that there may be a link between your oral health and stroke.

What Causes a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when a blood clots interrupts the supply of oxygen to the brain, killing brain cells. A person who is suffering from a stroke may show physical signs like a drooping face, arm weakness, or impaired speech.

As you age, the risk of stroke will increase. However, poor eating habits and lifestyle choices are also important factors that can cause a stroke. Researchers have also linked poor oral health with stroke.

The Connection Between Stroke and Gum Disease

If you do not take care to clean your mouth properly, it can lead to an accumulation of plaque that can cause gum disease. In its early stages, gum disease is easily treated and its effects are reversible. However, once it progresses to the advanced, chronic stage, gum disease can cause a lot of damage to your oral health.

The main link between gum disease and a stroke is inflammation caused by bacteria. Bacteria from the mouth can get into the bloodstream, causing blood clots there, which can lead to stroke.

Moreover, gum disease has also been linked to diabetes, a higher risk of Alzheimer's and certain cancers.

Since a large number of Americans are affected by both gum disease and stroke, it is important that good oral care should be taken to reduce the risk of both these conditions.

Patients who suffer from a stroke may not be able to properly clean their teeth by themselves. That is why it is doubly important that they regularly visit Dr. James Krippaehne and team at West End Dental.
