Should You Worry About Brand When Buying Oral Care Items?

Posted on 11/16/2020 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Should You Worry About Brand When Buying Oral Care Items?Shopping for oral hygiene products can be overwhelming since there are so many different brands to choose from. Even within a single popular brand, there are toothpastes and other items available in a wide variety of styles and flavors that claim to address all kinds of oral health concerns: whitening, tartar control, sensitivity, et cetera. The good news is that when it comes to choosing oral hygiene products, the brand does not matter all that much. The most important aspect to look for in toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, sugar-free gum, or other oral care items is the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

What is the ADA Seal of Acceptance?

The American Dental Association evaluates dental hygiene items for their safety and effectiveness. Companies have to apply for the Seal, and not every oral health product will qualify. In order to be awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance, a product has to be tested in either clinical or lab studies to prove its safety and effectiveness, and the manufacturing company has to provide definitive data from these studies. If the product meets the ADA's requirements, it receives the Seal for five years. If any of the item's ingredients change before the end of the five-year period, the product needs to be retested. Products that are awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance have to clearly display the Seal logo on their packaging.

Why is ADA Approval Important?

As dentists, the health and safety of our patients is our primary concern. The ADA is the most trusted authority on dental healthcare in the United States. If the ADA approves an oral hygiene item, it means that the product is safe and effective for the public to use, and the company who makes this product is not putting forth any misleading or dangerous claims. Currently, there are over 200 dental care products available that contain the ADA Seal of Acceptance. If you have questions about choosing oral hygiene products, call our office today.
