Perks of Scaling and Root Planing

Posted on 10/19/2020 by Dr. James A. Krippaehne
Perks of Scaling and Root PlaningWhile scaling and root planing is more comprehensive than a routine cleaning, as it sometimes requires more than one appointment and the use of local anesthesia, the procedure comes with several benefits. Scaling and root planing can often be necessary for the vitality of the oral cavity, particularly if the patient has a severe case of gum disease. The deeper cleaning of scaling and root planing is more rigorous, but it amounts to many benefits for the patient.

Benefits to Scaling and Root Planing

Our dentist will advise the use of scaling and root planing when they notice signs of periodontitis, a severe type of gum disease. Scaling and root planing is used to clean the oral cavity thoroughly, by providing a deep clean of both the teeth and gums. The first benefit is that it will alleviate symptoms of discomfort and soreness that you may be experiencing from your gums. This is because the bacteria that was irritating the gums will have been removed and the area smoothed to discourage further growth. It should also lead to less bleeding from the gums, therefore making it easier to carry out your usual oral hygiene routine.

Scaling and root planing should reduce further risks caused by gum disease, such as tooth loss and gum recession, as the plaque and tartar that induce this have been removed. This will also mean a general bettering of your oral health, especially with good upkeep during your oral hygiene routine at home. Your breath should be fresher, as the buildup of plaque and debris that causes bad breath will be removed. This can also have an effect on your self-esteem and general mood, as patients say they feel better when their oral health is in good condition.
