Signs Your Baby Needs Relief from Painful Gums

As a parent you never want your baby to suffer through pain. Of course, you also don't want to over-medicate him either. This is why it's so challenging to know when you should give your child some relief from the painful gums they'll experience when teething. Fortunately, there are some signs that your baby will give you so you can know to help them.

Symptoms Typical of a Teething Baby

Understanding that your baby will show some visible symptoms will help ease your mind. These typically include a mild fever of under 102 degrees Fahrenheit, increased drooling, a runny nose, and having a decreased appetite when it comes to solid food. These are symptoms that shouldn't interfere with your baby's daily routine.

Common Symptoms that Occur Less Frequently

There are some other symptoms that may also occur when your baby is teething, but won't necessarily do so. These include the fact that they'll bite, suck, and chew more; develop a facial rash; start rubbing their gums or ears; and become more irritable than usual. When your baby has any of these symptoms you can try rubbing their gums with your clean finger, applying a cold washcloth, giving them a chilled (not frozen) teething ring, offering them something hard to gnaw on, keeping the drool cleaned off of their face, applying a water-based lotion to their face, or giving them some acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

When to Call the Doctor

Typically, you'll be able to handle your baby's teething at home, on your own. However, there are sometimes when you'll want to give us a call. For instance, if your baby seems really uncomfortable, we can offer you some additional help.

You should also know that there are some symptoms that may appear when your baby is teething, but aren't associated with the teething process. This includes a fever of over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, not wanting to take in liquids, a rash somewhere other than on their face, and uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhea.
