How to Get the Benefits of Raisins without the Damage

Posted on 6/8/2020 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
How to Get the Benefits of Raisins without the DamageIf you have a sweet tooth, dried food can satisfy it. However, you also have to be careful about eating sticky foods. So, how do you satisfy your sweet tooth, but still enjoy the benefits of dried fruit, such as raisins? The following information will help you eat raisins with less guilt.

Some Surprising Findings about Raisins

It is true – raisins are sticky and they are sweet. However, the sugars in raisins are glucose and fructose, not sucrose, which is notorious for producing plaque. Foods containing or made with sucrose allow bacteria to readily stick to the teeth – the same bacteria that creates plaque-causing cavities. Moreover, this is the best part – raisins contain phytochemicals. Phytochemicals benefit the immune system, which means improved bone health and better skin, and vision. Raisins, which are a rich source of phytochemicals, kill the bacteria in plaque that causes cavities. In turn, the plaque in raisins is less sticky and easier to brush away.

Other Measures You Can Take

You don't have to give up raisins, as they are good for you. However, since they are still a dried fruit and sticky, you still need to rinse your mouth with water after you eat them. That will help, at least, get rid of some of the sugars and plaque on the teeth. Because raisins pack a lot of nutritional punch in small quantities, consuming a small amount will provide added nutrition and make it easier to care for your teeth.

We support nutrition that also backs good dental practices. While raisins may not be the first food we recommend, you can still eat the dried fruit, provided you take measures to ensure against dental decay and damage. Professional cleanings and exams also support good dental health. Give us a call today if you have not seen us in the past year. Schedule professional cleanings and exams every six months.
