We all know that we should floss out teeth after every meal and brush them just before we go to sleep, but we're probably a little guilty of forgetting every once in a while. So what happens during those times when we forget? Whenever we have a meal, we're not the only ones that benefit from that meal. The bacteria in our mouth also eat the food that gets deposited in the little spaces on and between our teeth. When they're eating they produce waste matter that is very acidic and causes the tooth enamel to decay, causing cavities. What happens when you Forget to Brush at Night? The food deposited on the teeth and mixes with bacteria, it forms plaque, which is soft at first and easy to remove by brushing our teeth. However, if you go to bed without brushing your teeth, the plaque hardens and calcifies, making it virtually impossible to remove via brushing or flossing. You will then need to come to our office and have it professionally removed. In fact, you shouldn't allow plaque to build up on your teeth because it will lead to infection and swelling in your gums, as well as bad breath. Tooth RecoveryThe night is also an important time for your teeth to recover from all of the wear and tear they've been through throughout the day. The night time is when they get to remineralize. If you leave them with food deposits on them you interfere with this natural process and that weakens your teeth in the long run. It is quite important to brush your teeth before you go to sleep. It protects not only your teeth and your health, but also your pocket as it saves you the money and stress of having to deal with advanced dental problems later on that could have been prevented by just brushing your teeth. |
