When You Manage Your Stress, It Can Improve Your Oral Health

Posted on 5/15/2019 by Office of Dr. James A. Krippaehne
When You Manage Your Stress, It Can Improve Your Oral HealthA little stress in your life is healthy, as it makes you ambitious and gives you goals for which to aim. However, when stress becomes overwhelming, different areas of your life might be affected, including your teeth. When you learn to manage your stress, your oral health may improve, too.

Quit Teeth Grinding

Many people grind their teeth – a condition known as bruxism – as a result of high stress levels. This may be something entirely subconscious that you don't even know that you're doing, or you may grind them at night while you are asleep. Dealing with your stress can help, but if you still struggle, a night guard can help to protect your teeth while you sleep.

Improved Oral Hygiene

When you are stressed about something at work or in your personal life, your time and attention may be focused on that one thing. Unfortunately, this means that other aspects of your life might be neglected, including your dental hygiene. When you take steps to manage your stress, your mind will be free to keep up with your oral care routine.

Avoid Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is connected to stress in a couple of ways. First, it is a side effect of stress on its own. Secondly, if you are using antidepressants in order to deal with your troubles, you may experience dry mouth from your prescription. When saliva levels are compromised, you will be at an increased risk for many dental issues, including infection, gum disease, and tooth decay.

Prevent Dental Issues

Certain dental issues have been connected to stress. Tooth decay risk increases with neglected oral health routines, and stress may also inhibit the immune system, putting you at risk for gum disease. Stress is also believed to be a trigger for canker sores.
