|Do you need something healthy to snack on? We can recommend many different options, but nuts are always at the top of our list. There are a few great things about nuts.
First, there's the variety. Even if you're not a huge fan of eating peanuts, you might love cashews or pecans. Then there are the health benefits. Let's take a closer look at why nuts are the perfect snack for your teeth.
They Contain Nutrients that Help Teeth
Nuts have a good amount of protein in them, which means they're a good option for those who don't eat a lot of meat. But nuts also contain a good amount of phosphate, calcium, and magnesium. These three minerals are all important nutrients that your teeth and mouth need.
They're Not Full of Sugar
Nuts don't contain much in the way of sugar or starch, which means they don't feed bacteria. Snacking on cookies or candy is going to give the bacteria on your teeth a huge feast, leading to more plaque, damage to your mouth, and bad breath. Snacking on nuts won't do that. In fact, they will help your body battle bacteria by giving it nutrients.
Which Nuts are Best?
Are all nuts equal? Of course not, but all of them do contain nutrients and are low in sugar. If you have to pick, you can't go wrong with peanuts. They contain vitamin D and calcium, both of which help your teeth grow strong and healthy.
If you don't want to eat the nuts themselves, organic peanut butter is an alternative way of getting the benefits of peanuts. Just be sure it's organic and doesn't have any added sugar. Almonds, cashews, and walnuts are all good options, too.
Of course, eating nuts instead of candy for a snack is only one part of having healthy teeth. You also need to come see us regularly for cleanings and checkups.
