Caring for Teeth During the Orthodontic Retention Phase

Posted on 7/1/2025 by West End Dental
Woman looking at her smile in a mirror. Congratulations! You've reached the exciting milestone of completing your orthodontic treatment. After months or even years of braces or aligners, your teeth are finally in their new, beautiful positions. But your journey isn't quite over yet. Just as important as straightening your teeth was, the orthodontic retention phase plays a crucial role in maintaining your newly straightened smile.

During this phase, your teeth are still susceptible to shifting back towards their original positions. This is because the bone and ligaments surrounding your teeth need time to adjust and solidify around their new alignment. To prevent this unwanted movement, your orthodontist will likely recommend wearing retainers. These custom-made appliances gently hold your teeth in place, allowing the supporting structures to stabilize.

Types of Retainers

There are two main types of retainers:
•  Removable retainers: These are typically made of clear plastic and are worn for a specific number of hours each day or night. They are easy to remove for eating, brushing, and flossing, but it's essential to wear them as instructed by your orthodontist.
•  Fixed retainers: These are thin wires bonded to the back of your front teeth. They are virtually invisible and require no special care, but they do need to be checked by your orthodontist regularly.

Caring for Your Retainers

Proper care for your retainers is essential for ensuring their effectiveness and longevity. Here are some tips:
•  Clean your retainers regularly. Brush them with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, or use a retainer cleaning solution.
•  Avoid exposing your retainers to extreme temperatures. Don't leave them in hot water or direct sunlight, as this can warp the plastic.
•  Store your retainers in a safe place when not in use. Use the case provided by your orthodontist to protect them from damage.
•  Don't eat or drink with your retainers in. This can stain them and make them more difficult to clean.
•  See your orthodontist for regular checkups. They will monitor your progress and make sure your retainers are fitting properly.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

While wearing your retainers is crucial, maintaining good oral hygiene is equally important during the retention phase. Here are some essential tips:
•  Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a fluoride toothpaste and be sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including around the brackets or wires of your fixed retainer.
•  Floss daily. This helps remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth and under your retainers.
•  Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks. These can damage your teeth and contribute to cavities.
•  Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can monitor your oral health and provide professional cleaning to remove any buildup that your brushing and flossing may miss.

The Importance of the Retention Phase

It's important to understand that the retention phase is not just an afterthought. It's an integral part of orthodontic treatment that helps ensure the long-term success of your beautiful new smile. By following your orthodontist's instructions and maintaining good oral hygiene, you can keep your teeth in their new positions and enjoy the benefits of a straight, healthy smile for years to come.
