Give Yourself a Self-Check after Cleaning Your Teeth

Posted on 7/1/2024 by West End Dental

Regular brushing and flossing are essential, but did you know that giving your teeth a quick self-check after cleaning can be just as important? It's a simple yet effective way to catch potential problems early and prevent them from becoming more serious.

As an experienced general dentist and member of the American Dental Association, I'm constantly seeking new ways to educate my patients on the importance of preventive dentistry. This article is your guide to performing a post-cleaning self-check, empowering you to become an active participant in maintaining your oral health.

Why Self-Check?

Think of your mouth as a window into your overall health. Just like any other part of your body, it can exhibit subtle signs of underlying issues. A self-check after cleaning allows you to become familiar with your mouth's normal appearance and texture, making it easier to detect any changes that might warrant a visit to your dentist.

What to Look For

So, what exactly should you be looking for during your self-check? Here's a quick guide:
•  Visually inspect your teeth: Look for any cracks, chips, or unusual discoloration. Pay close attention to fillings or crowns to ensure they're intact.
•  Check your gums: Healthy gums should be firm, pink, and free of swelling or bleeding. If you notice any redness, tenderness, or bleeding, especially during or after brushing, it could indicate gum disease.
•  Examine your tongue: A healthy tongue is typically pink and has a slightly textured surface. Look for any changes in color, texture, or the presence of sores or bumps.
•  Feel the inside of your mouth: Run your tongue along the insides of your cheeks, lips, and palate. If you feel any lumps, bumps, or rough patches, it's important to get them checked by your dentist.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you notice any of the following during your self-check, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with your dentist:
•  Persistent pain or sensitivity in your teeth
•  Loose or cracked teeth
•  Bleeding gums that don't improve after a few days
•  Sores or lumps in your mouth that don't heal within two weeks
•  White or red patches on your tongue or gums

The Importance of Regular Dental Checkups

While self-checks are a valuable tool, they should not replace regular dental checkups and cleanings. Visiting your dentist every six months allows for a thorough examination of your oral cavity and early detection of potential problems.

Taking an active role in your oral health is as simple as performing a quick self-check after cleaning your teeth. By familiarizing yourself with your mouth's normal appearance and texture, you can catch potential issues early on and seek professional help when needed. Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile.
