What Are the Phases of Dentistry?

Control Phase

In the control phase of dentistry, it is essential to accurately identify all issues affecting the oral health of a patient. This can be challenging, as problems may not always be obvious and can sometimes stem from patient habits that need to be addressed for long-term oral health. It is not just about fixing immediate dental issues; it is about interrupting harmful habits and addressing all risk factors to ensure lasting oral wellness.

The control phase should be more than just traditional dental procedures like fillings and extractions. Instead, it should encompass a comprehensive assessment of patient risk levels and other factors. These factors might include diet, oral hygiene practices, lifestyle habits, and medical conditions that impact oral health.

Conservation Phase

The conservation phase in dentistry focuses on preserving and maintaining existing oral structures for the long term. It is essentially a strategic plan aimed at safeguarding what a patient currently has in terms of dental health throughout the next 5 to 10 years. However, this does not mean that the conservation phase must take 5 to 10 years to complete. Instead, it should be carried out as promptly as possible within practical and financial constraints to achieve the best possible dental outcomes.

Reconstruction Phase

The reconstruction phase is where patients seek to enhance the aesthetics and function of their smiles. However, it is also the phase that many individuals need help to pursue due to the associated costs. While some may view reconstruction as more of a want than a need, it is crucial to recognize its significance from a dental perspective.

Maintenance Phase

During the maintenance phase, the focus is on regular check-ups and screenings to detect any existing or new dental issues promptly. By establishing a risk-based recall interval based on patient risk levels and behaviors identified during this phase, we can ensure timely intervention and prevention of potential problems.
