Uncommon Dental Injuries to Be Aware Of

Uncommon Dental Injuries to Be Aware OfThere is a good chance that you have a decent knowledge of cavities and maybe even gum disease. You probably have heard about teeth grinding, and you might also have a little bit of knowledge about crowns and veneers. These are all common. There are also some uncommon dental injuries that you should also be aware of.

Sports Injuries

If you play sports, or if you have a child who is an athlete, you know a bit about sports injuries. Some of obvious, such as a broken ankle or a black eye. One thing that you might not think to look for is a dental injury. In a contact sport, it could happen. The same thing is true of a sport where there is a lot of running. If there is a hit to the mouth, you need to keep an eye on the situation.

If there is bleeding that does not stop in a couple of minutes, you need to come in immediately. The same is true if a tooth is knocked out. If there is not a lot of blood and no loose teeth, ice on the area can help if there is any pain.

Physical Abuse
Tragically, a dental injury could be a sign of physical abuse. Often abusers will go for the face when they attack. If someone you know has unexplained bruises or often has difficulty talking, that could be a sign.
You should take any dental injury seriously.

An injury could cause a shift in alignment of the teeth, and there could be other problems as well. It is important that you have the injury looked at as soon as possible. We want to make sure that you and your family have beautiful smiles that will last a lifetime. It is better to come in soon than to wait and have problems down the road.
